Bio

Karen DeSalvo joined the faculty at Tulane University in 1996 as an assistant professor. She was promoted to associate professor in 2003 and to professor in 2008. She had joint adjunct appointments in the Departments of Epidemiology, Health Systems Management, and Global Health Systems and Development. During her tenure at Tulane, DeSalvo also served as chief of general medicine, co-director of the Center for Health Equality Research, special assistant to the university president for health policy, executive director for Tulane’s University Community Health Centers, and vice dean for community affairs and health policy. Her work has its most notable impact in the public sector, where DeSalvo led recovery efforts and redesigned and implemented an improved health care delivery system in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
