Personal profile

Luis H. Zayas is dean of the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. He holds the Robert Lee Sutherland Chair in Mental Health and Social Policy and is a professor of psychiatry at the Dell Medical School. He completed his master’s degree in social work and his Ph.D in developmental psychology at Columbia University. Zayas is a licensed clinical social worker and licensed psychologist in Texas. His primary area of research for the past 30 years has been in the suicide attempts of Latina adolescents, on which his book “Latinas Attempting Suicide: When Cultures, Families, and Daughters Collide” (Oxford, 2011) is based.

During the past 12 years, Zayas has turned his clinical and research attention to the conditions facing U.S. citizen-children whose undocumented Latin American immigrant parents have been deported and to the conditions faced by refugee children and mothers from Central America who have been placed in detention centers in South Texas by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. His research has been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. His latest book is “Forgotten Citizens: Deportation, Children, and the Making of Exiles and Orphans” (Oxford, 2015).

Fingerprint Fingerprint is based on mining the text of the experts' scientific documents to create an index of weighted terms, which defines the key subjects of each individual researcher.
