Personal profile

Bio

Miyong Kim is a professor in Dell Med's Department of Population Health and a professor in the School of Nursing. Kim is a translational researcher who has built a strong program of research focused on community-based participatory research as a means of reducing cardiovascular-related health disparities among ethnic minority populations. Kim’s research program examines the effectiveness of self-care strategies for improving health outcomes and overcoming racial, ethnic and social disparities in health care. She has conducted several descriptive studies to explore and better define barriers and facilitators to equitable care for this racial and ethnic minority population. She has conducted more than 40 externally funded studies to improve minority health, and her research has been published in more than 100 high-impact scientific journals.

Kim currently serves as the inaugural associate vice president of community health engagement at The University of Texas at Austin. Most recently, in collaboration with 14 departments at UT and more than 10 community partners, Kim successfully obtained NIH funding to open a collaborative research center, the Center for Trans-Disciplinary Collaborative Research in Self-Management Science (TCRSS). As the principal investigator and director for this new center, she is actively facilitating community-partnered research projects, mentoring junior investigators and establishing an extensive network of community collaborators.

Kim’s research links community-building strategies and health outcomes for individuals from communities that have had difficulty getting access to health care. Her work continues to inform the researchers and clinicians to find community-based evidence materials that deliver high-quality, equitable care to increasingly diverse patient populations.

Kim had a distinguished career at Johns Hopkins University, where she started as an assistant professor and rose to the rank of full professor. She served as department chair and the director of the Center for Excellence in Cardiovascular Health Promotion before moving to UT Austin in 2013.
